The MVP program brings together young people, researchers, educators, and community partners to support community learning around topics of interest. Central to this work is supporting young people in becoming data artists through activities that cultivate their learning and engagement with data and art through a transdisciplinary approach. In the MVP program, students (“data artists”) engage in identifying community issues, collecting and analyzing relevant data, and expressing their insights through artistic data visualizations that they then share with community members through learning events.

Four cycles running from Spring 2023 to Summer 2024 given that the program was designed as a design-based research project. Through structured learning sessions and community learning events, data artists develop skills in data interpretation, creative expression, and social impact storytelling. By integrating mathematics, visual arts, and social inquiry, the MVP program empowers youth and their communities to see data as a meaningful tool for understanding and engaging in the world.
